The MTC Outreach Service advocates the use of standard infusions for the transfer
of patients to the MTC, detailed later (adapted from Magpas).
Transfer service
Indications |
• As an infusion for maintenance of sedation and anaesthesia in ventilated patients

Cautions |
• Elderly • Hypovolaemia • Cardiovascular disease All predispose to hypotension and risk circulatory collapse |
Dose (1ml = 20mg) |
• Adults: 1– 4mg/kg/hr (0–20ml/hr)
• Children: 1– 4mg/kg/hr • Titrate to blood pressure • Adult bolus: 1–2mls |
Special groups |
• Safe in pregnancy
• Safe in children for short term use |
Side effects |
• Hypotension (negatively inotropic and vasodilatory) • Apnoea |
